It has been adapted multiple times, first as a 2003 Japanese live action film, second as a 2017 manga, and in 2020, it received a Korean live action adaptation and a 2020 anime adaptation by Studio_Bones based off of the 2017 manga. The anime was directed by Tamura Kotaro, written by Kuwamura Sayaka, and stars as its leads seiyuu who are known more for their live action work, Nakagawa Taishi and Kiyohara Kaya. The soundtrack was composed by Evan Call. The characters were designed by Emoto_Nao. Each incarnation of the story follows the same basic premise and share some plot points. The story centers around a budding romantic relationship between the able-bodied Suzukawa Tsuneo and Kumiko, who prefers to go by Josee, a young woman who has been confined to a wheelchair since birth. However, each incarnation of the story has its own spin on said premise to the point that each version has numerous scenes unique to said version and different endings. The 2020 anime sets the story in Osaka, Japan. Tsuneo is a sea-loving university student who's saving up for his dream of studying abroad in Mexico. One night, he literally bumps into Josee after her wheelchair is pushed down a slope. After seeing him help Josee, her grandmother asks Tsuneo to take the part time job of being Josee's caretaker. There are only two conditions for the job: Tsuneo must listen to Josee and he must not take her outside. Tsuneo accepts, but this seemingly easy job turns out to be far more stressful than he imagined thanks to Josee's prickly personality and lack of social skills. However, Tsuneo's opinion of Josee changes once he stumbles upon Josee's artistic talent/passions and learns of her dream: to be able to reach for and taste the sea. Tsuneo is inspired to help Josee reach for her dream and the story follows their growth as people and their budding relationship as they work together.
