An old shipyard is being decommissioned and scrapped .. With the superstructure gone, salvaging teams dived down to the bottom to cut up the remainders of the old posts. Dirty work, lots of fumes and dust you don't wanna breathe in - gills or not - better gear up good!

Loved the whole idea throughout; drysuits, big visors, industrial gear n sharks! Also, working the deets n markings of her main outfit into her gear was a fun idea! The yellow industrial and the blue suit colours work together so well ;w;

Essentially (at least in my head canon) the scuba suit seems to keep some unpolluted water inside and pumps clear air into the water so the shark can breathe normally. And while yes they could breathe the polluted water, it wouldn’t be a good idea.

Yup, who cares. Cool scuba shark.
I agree with you though, if one could breath water, a filtration system might be the better option, but I suppose that depends on the power requirements. An oxygenation system might take less power than a filtration system.
This would be a good environment for my water dragon characters. (That's actually the sort of environment they work in.) They can't fly, but their wing membrane functions as gills, so they can't get clogged with debris. They also use them to swim, though they are hardly the fastest creature underwater.

In my head canon, the visor/helmet keeps in a bit of unpolluted water that keeps having clean air from the scuba tank pumped into it. It’s a bit more user friendly than a scuba mask as well since your vision isn’t as obstructed and you can easily talk without worrying about the mouthpiece.
Well to quote Darbaras themself...
“Dirty work, lots of fumes and dust you don’t wanna breathe in - gills or not.”
I think the scuba tank for the water in her “helmet” would be like clean air to us, yeah we can breath dirty air but it won’t be pleasant or healthy.
