Because cats rely on sense of smell in order to taste food, if the food doesn't smell, the cat thinks its not edible. My cat only eats his food if i warm it up which is how the smell gets a bit stronger.
Or if the cat is spoiled to be given scrap foods, he will go for that food instead for the cat food because cats are picky and they will always eat the tastiest.

I never sure if you can say that cat is "spoiled" by scrap food or "special" food. I had friend who worked where they make it.. coumpound actually worse than one for hot dogs, because there are less restrictions. And yu know main ingridient? Wheat. Felines are slightly allergic to certain herbs and that depends on strain of cat, but even human can become allergic to wheat it he etas _only_ wheat-based food.
There are certain good brands of foodstuff and very horrible ones, wiskas is one of the worst.. apparently many cats around here reject it by smell.

They usually leave a little bit of food in her bowl all day because she's an indoor/outdoor cat. If she gets hungry and there's no food in the bowl, she'll go after bugs outside and there was a bit of a scare after she got really sick trying to eat a slug. I don't mean belly rubs, I mean if someone is in the room or near enough, she'll sit by her bowl meowing until they pet her head, back or tail. But if no one's there like at night or something, she'd snack a bit.
Some cats just like to be acknowledged :) This was supposed to be more about cats being silly, anyway

I actually worked at a speciatly pet store for 4 years and was certified in just about every department, including the optional nutrition certification. I know more about pet food than I thought there ever was to know, and I can reaffirm this. Almost any major brandname food you can go into a store and already know the name of is going to suffer in quality. Cats do rely on smell for their food, meaning if they can't smell it, or it is an unfamiliar scent, they won't touch it. The wheat/corn/grain issues are very true, as cats naturally get the vast majority of their diet from meat in the wild.
As far as the whole petting thing goes, I have a cat that will eat a small amount of his food, but generally wants to be pet to finish all his food because he gets massive separation anxiety if I leave him in his feeding room alone.

my kitty's anxiety is so bad that he panics if doors that are usually open are shut, or we're behind a closed door. he will literally mewl sadly and "pound" on the door, rubbing it with his forepaws and bouncing it within the frame until it's opened. Mind you, this is a 15 pound large cat insistently banging on your door while you're trying to sleep.
My shiba inu is like this actually. She digs in the bowl and looks at us, we take out the food and she licks her lips, then we put it in the bowl and she... goes play with the ball. When we tell her to eat she looks at us, at the bowl, back at us and then goes away! They said shibas are like cats, it's true.
Ahhh. Cats behave quite differently, they act like they're always starving no matter how much food they have (or act like the bowl is completely empty when it's only half empty, but they want it to be full) and generally they keep US as pets, not the other way around.
Well, not so much pets, more like staff.

Haha, yeah, had cats like that. Though our current two will do the same we're almost dead thing but they will chow down immediately, no rejection. The only thing is that as soon as the next person in the house wakes up or comes home they'll start asking again even with a full bowl of food still there... leeches.....
